Stefán Ás Ingvarsson, founder and CEO of Njörður, which aims to build a magnesium plant at Grundartangi in Hvalfjörður, says that the company plans to produce its first test batch in Iceland early next year.

Njörður’s planned annual production, which will make it the first sustainable company of its kind in Europe, is 50,000 tonnes of magnesium.

The company’s technology, which is patented and based on Icelandic innovation, produces magnesium from seawater — a far more environmentally friendly method than those used for most of the world’s magnesium production.
